"Lack of Respect Issue Not Addressed in Editorial"

Title

"Lack of Respect Issue Not Addressed in Editorial"

Description

This angry response to "Black or African-American" from Hashim Johnson asks the Technician why it felt the need to label African Americans or differentiate them from the general student population. Hashim argues that the Technician knowingly sparked this debate to create divisions within the African American student population through a tactic of "divide and conquer." In addition, Hashim argues that the editorial piece revealed a lack of respect for African culture and peoples, and their diversity.

Text

Recently, Technician published an editorial that explored the issue of what Africans should be called in America. As an African, born in America, I was deeply disappointed with your editorial. In my opinion, it lacked depth and sensitivity. Question--there are many Africans who have migrated from the continent of Africa, what is the Technician going to call their children? In addition, it was a crying shame that the editorial tried to use the age old technique of divide and conquer to evoke an emotional response among Africans. To put it that simple was weak. However, to suggest that one hue correctly describes Africans, whose skin complexions stretches like a rainbow, was even weaker! I could go on, but I won't because the editorial avoided the real problem the world has with Africans. And that is most people in the world have a complete lack of respect for Africans. The way the media portrays Africans in this country and Africans on the continent of Africa has contributed to this lack of replace for a great race. More importantly, the burden is on Technician, N.C. State, the state of North Carolina, the United States of America, and the world to come to terms with this ignorance. Otherwise, you shall become a victim of it! Finally, call me a human being!
