Introduction

As North Carolina progressed in the twentieth-century, the role of higher education adapted to fit society's needs, and these goals were reflected in attitudes towards college sports.  From its inception in the 1880s, NC State College--like other contemporary colleges--was devoted to developing students' intellect and creating productive and upstanding citizens.
