In the following analysis and documents, The Nubian Message's focus remains on encouraging campus activism among African Americans. However, the changes in student leadership during 2000-2001 raised the stakes for student engagement in order to, in the eyes of the Message staff, ensure that promises for changes in campus life did not succumb to the institutional forces that sought to hinder them. As a result of these electoral gains for African American student leaders, The Nubian Message consistently worked against what Message writer and Student Body President Harold Pettigrew called the “hidden threats” that could dismantle affirmative action and other policies promoting diversity.
