Questions to Consider

Now that you have learned about the monetary interests involved in North Carolina State's 1936-1937 football controversy, consider these questions:

  • How did Graham argue for greater amateurism in intercollegiate sports?
  • Why do you think alumni like David Clark wanted more professionalization in college football?  What role does alumni play in football programs today?
  • How do you think students reacted to the commercialization aspect of this controversy?  Consider Mr. Bailey's remarks.
  • Read over the Lewis Sporting Goods Company receipt under the Noncompliance section.  Do you see anything fishy about the items ordered?  Do you think Dr. Graham was justified in going over all of these receipts?
  • Read Mr. Clark and Dr. Graham's debate over scholarships under the Noncompliance section.  How do they argue each side?  Without thinking about present day college football, which side do you think better articulates their point?
  • How commercialized is college football today?  Is this a problem?  How do the issues discussed in this exhibit reflect modern day concerns over amateurism vs. professionalization?
