"Break the Chains of Mental Bondage, Before It's Too Late. Wake Up!"

This editorial cartoon appeared in the September 14, 1993 issue of The Nubian Message. The cartoon depicts a person's arms shackled in chains. The left arm appears normal, while the right arm has been reduced to bone. The caption underneath the picture reads, "Break the chains of mental bondage, before it's too late. Wake up!"

This cartoon appeared next to an article justifying the extistence of the newspaper ("Why the Nubian?"). The cartoon adds to the article by suggesting that The Nubian Message will enlighten students about African-American experiences on and off campus. In contrast, not reading the newspaper (or reading other mainstream media) will keep students in "mental bondage," as other media frequently misrepresent African Americans.
