"Official Portrait of Barack Obama"

This photograph is of President Barack Obama, who was elected to office in 2008. As the first African-American president of the United States, Obama has been the subject of hate speech and racist remarks throughout his administration. Several incidents have occurred on the campus of North Carolina State University; in 2008 and 2010, students graffitied racist and homophobic remarks about the President on the Free Expression Tunnel. The response in both incidents was swift: students and University administration condemned racism and held pro-diversity events on campus.
