Radicalization of N.C. State
The election of Cathy Sterling as student body president and the creation of the Peace Retreat function as an inception and a climax in the history of North Carolina State University. The events of 1970 both represent the height of antiwar sentiment on campus that built on the momentum of the 1960s, as well as ushered in a new era of student activism at NC State. The decade prior to Sterling’s saw massive changes to NC State in terms of the university and its programs and student life that contributed to a shift in the politics of the student body.
