Title

"Magic Johnson giving a speech at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas on April 25, 2013"

Description

This photograph is of Magic Johnson, a retired professional basketball player and present-day businessman, philanthropist, and motivational speaker. Johnson played for the Los Angeles Lakers for thirteen seasons (1979-1991), and was a member of the 1992 U.S. men's Olympic basketball team, which won the gold medal. In 1991, Johnson announced that he had contracted HIV from having multiple heterosexual partners during his playing career. This announcement sparked widespread media coverage that speculated about Johnson's sexuality and the likelihood that other players could contract the disease from contact with Johnson on the court. Johnson later established the Magic Johnson Foundation to help fight HIV/AIDS worldwide, disseminate accurate information about the spread of the disease, and combat discrimination against the HIV/AIDS community.
