Johnson played for the Los Angeles Lakers for thirteen seasons (1979-1991), and was a member of the 1992 U.S. men's Olympic basketball team, which won the gold medal. In 1991, Johnson announced that he had contracted HIV from having multiple heterosexual partners during his playing career. Johnson later established the Magic Johnson Foundation to help fight HIV/AIDS worldwide, disseminate accurate information about the spread of the disease, and combat discrimination against the HIV/AIDS community.
