This photograph is of Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican political leader, writer, and activist who was a strong proponent of Black Nationalism. Garvey has been credited with synthesizing previous strands of political, economic, and cultural Black Nationalism into an integrated ideology in the post-World War I era. This integrated version of Black Nationalism was then adopted by left-leaning activists in the civil rights era, including the Black Panther Party and other radical groups.
